Living well includes feeling like we have some control over our destiny. In order to create the life we wish to live, we may need resources to help with planning, know our financial needs are met, explore a new career, start a business or find personal fulfillment by giving back. At first it may seem overwhelming but we begin by asking ...
Who Am I?
Many Boomers have been so caught up in making a living they have not given themselves permission to create a life. All too often we address the urgent things in our lives and we somehow never get to what's important. Now is the time to discover who you really are. The journey of self-discovery begins with the ageless question, "Who am I?" Start listening for the answer and if the answer comes in a whisper ... ask it to speak up!
What's Next For Me?
"To know what you prefer, instead of humbly saying 'Amen' to what the world tells you ought to prefer, is to keep your soul alive." Robert Louis Stevenson
The most important step in choosing 'what's next' is freeing yourself from the idea that you only have one bite at the apple. If you begin a book you don't like you simply start another book. If you don't like the music, you simply change the station. Give your self the luxury of life exploration. Sample your learning options. Should you go back to school or would you prefer to learn on location like the folks at Elderhostel? (www.elderhostel.org). Explore your opportunities for community involvement or a new social connection. Research a new career or consider starting your own business. Ask yourself, "Who would I be if I could be me?"
How Do I Get There?
There really is no "there" to get to. As you free yourself to explore your life, you become transformed. As you become transformed you may wish to explore something still totally different. The mind once expanded cannot return to its former condition. Begin this transformation by simply saying, "I don't know what I want, but this isn't it." That's enough to get you started. Search for inspiration rather than instruction. You can't develop a plan until you know what you are planning for. Once you are inspired, once your imagination is tickled, you have a hook to hang your plan on.
Feathers to tickle your imagination:
- If I knew then what I know now, I would ...
- I am my happiest when I ...
- I always wanted to learn ...
- I look forward to the day I can ...
- I always wanted to go ...
- If I knew I could make a difference, I would ...
